EPA regulations and commercial car wash compliance

car wash epa compliance

Car wash EPA regulations.

In most cases, commercial car washes are a more environmentally friendly option to car washing at home.

When washing a car at home, on a driveway or on the street, contaminants like soap, grime and oil can make their way down stormwater drains and into waterways.

Modern commercial car wash facilities are equipped with water recycling systems and waste collection pits designed to stop pollutants, like heavy metals and petrochemicals, from entering waterways.

In June, EPA Victoria officers conducted unannounced inspections of commercial car washes.

In June, EPA Victoria officers conducted unannounced inspections of commercial car washes. They found facilities failed to properly capture, treat or dispose of waste water, even allowing waste water to drain to the street and into the stormwater system.

The inspections concentrated on stormwater management, the disposal of wash water, the storage and handling of chemicals, spill response readiness, the use of EPA’s Waste Tracker to make sure priority waste goes to the right place for disposal, and trade waste agreement with local authorities.

Strict environmental regulations govern car wash facilities and it’s the owner’s responsibility to ensure they’re being adhered to.  If you’re operating an older facility with aging equipment, a quick assessment by one of our service technicians will ensure you’re operating in accordance with EPA regulations.
